grandaddy

wish i could've known you now
'cause i might've understood
the way you saw the world
and always tried to do the best you could

i wonder if you got that old time feelin'
deep in your chest like it is in mine
that made you ramble around
this 'ol mason-dixon land

and i think i'd have done the same
when the big one came round
fight for my country with a flute in my hand
proud as ever in the navy band stand

when you made my daddy
you made me too and the lord made us three
for to do the best we can
you always did and its
what made you a man

i choked back tears
when they laid you in the ground
stars and stripes draped across
that heartwood pine
six feet under where im standin now
with my grandaddy on my mind

for tonight

sinking in this seat
my gut ain't feelin' too right
what were about to do
is only gonna feel good tonight

ain't spoke your name in months
that didn't come without a fight
if it feels good in the dark
bet it hurts like hell in the mornin' light

let's shame the devil girl
and just tell the truth
ain't neither on of us thinkin'
'bout what were 'bout to do

that sun'll burn my eyes
as i'm slippin' on my boots and out the door
well spend a couple of days hurtin'
and couple more wonderin' what for
